The interior of Alentejo is characterized by extensive olive groves and big wine cooperatives, but also by vast oak tree forests and hills with eucalyptus plantations. Miles of rugged pastures are in between. These lands are the habitat of a.o. the sadly nearly extinct lynx, the wild cat and the jackal. To see those creatures you have to be very lucky though. Alentejo is for bird watching however a windfall.
The coast of Alentejo, with the rough cliffs and beautiful little beaches and bays in between, is an unknown pearl. The 'Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina' is one of the best preserved coasts of Europe and one of the most beautiful spots of Alentejo. The abundant rich, salt tolerant flora in spring is unique. Also uniqque is the colony of stork nesting on the cliffs nearby Odeceixe.
